Waiting for the Ferry

Our Ferry departs on Tuesday the 25th so we had a day to explore Prince Rupert and Port Edward.  Both communities are transportation centers with rail and seaport facilities.  There are several ferry lines that leave from Prince Rupert and they service communities like Ketchikan and Juneau that can only be reached by water.  The water also brings cruise ships (and tourists) to the town of 15,000 residents.   What struck us most though was how fish centric the area is.  Commercial, charter, and private fishing was evident everywhere.  The Kinnikinnick Campground where we stayed was about 50% fishermen.  The guys next door had a good day today and boated 4 nice 20lb-25lb King Salmon.

The water front area (called cow bay) had dockage for some nice sized yachts and large commercial fishing vessels.  Of course there were plenty of gift shops to explore.  We had dinner at Smiley’s restaurant, an establishment that has been there since 1934.  A seafood platter with Halibut, Salmon, Prawns, Scallops, and breaded oysters was the special of the day.  Tempting as that was, I just had to have the pan fried Halibut “cheeks”.  As they say, mmm, mmm, good!
